Today, I Support Susan "Toots" Ople for Senator

Today at my tambayan I found myself in conversation with Eddie, one of the waiters there (it was a slow day for the shop). As is not unusual among people who work in the service industry, the fellow wanted a better job, preferably abroad.

Wanting to be an OFW isn't unusual for a lot of Filipinos; not until our own economy reaches the point where there is certain job security and salary scales that match the local cost of living will our people start to consider staying and using their skills locally.

The OFW life isn't easy, as any of our migrant workers will tell you; I myself had been an OFW twice in my life (and personally I'm glad they weren't long stints). Long before they get on the plane to their jobs, there are a lot of potential pitfalls; there are illegal recruiters, leeches in the POEA and the OWWA, shills in the DFA -- there is much yet to clean up here. Upon flying out to their jobs, OFWs are faced with the difficulties of a life abroad, and many still are the complaints about the lack of support by our own government with regarding to protecting our expatriate countrymen.

This is why we need someone like Toots Ople in the Senate. We need someone who has been working with OFWs, understands their needs, and has been consistent in championing their causes. We need someone like Toots in the legislature, one who will help hammer out legislation towards the upliftment of our OFWs' plight; likewise, we need someone like Toots who will help in working for the long-term goal of encouraging our people to stay and use their talents to help in our own progress. We can't export human capital forever and expect our country to grow technologically, economically, even politically.

Today, I support Susan "Toots" Ople's senatorial bid. I encourage you to do the same.

I've only encountered Toots in person twice (I think it was just twice, I'm not that sure) and only in passing, but I have seen her work in the papers, and thus far I must say that her efforts will make her a valuable member of the Senate. I have only had short but very insightful conversations with her, and what I have learned has convinced me that we need her in the Upper House. Her work has demonstrated her competence and dedication; I have little doubt that she will do a great job in the Senate.

Her campaign website is www.ople2010.com, but of greater interest to me as someone who believes in uplifting the OFW and the Filipino is the website of the organization she has been working for, the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and Training Institute. In my effort to get to know her personal beliefs better, I have been visiting her blog susanople.com, and there is very little that one will find unimpressive.

Friends, her work speaks for itself. Each of us has at least one OFW in the family; each of us has at least one friend working abroad. With Toots in the Senate, I am convinced we can have a strong chance of helping our families and friends gain a better life -- and one day bring them home to a better Philippines.

  1. Hi there! :) My name is Estelle, and I'm the daughter of Toots. :) Thank you so much for supporting my mom. I am glad you recognize that she's been consistent in her advocacy for OFWs, and that should she be blessed to serve the public in the Senate, she has the competence, the dedication and the sincerity to do justice to the people's trust.

Of course, some people might say I'm biased. :p But I'm just so proud of her! She is an awesome mom, and bias aside, a great role model for anyone! :)

Sige po, maraming salamat po uli. :) And I hope more people will follow suit and research on the backgrounds AND track records of those who are running for public office. :) More power to you!

  3. Hi, I read this posted in Carlo's FB status. Very well said! I am an OFW here in Saudi Arabia and I always appreciated Toots in her staunch and unwavering support to the OFWs. Toots will not only get my vote but that of my family and friends as well! We're on the planning stage of mobilizing the Pinoy OFW bloggers to fully support her candidacy to the Senate. I'll link this post in my blog and FB. K lang ba?

  5. @toots -- err. okay. you should know that because i support you i'm going to look at you more critically. :) estelle, you should also know that i can write very scathingly.

that said, all the best to your campaign.

@desert aquaforce -- go ahead, but do keep an eye out just in case a tomorrow comes that i decide not to support toots anymore. (this is why i used the word "today"; things can happen and i may later decide otherwise -- we as voters have to keep an eye on candidates we favor to see if they continue doing the advocacies that lead us to support them.)

@anonymous -- sipol po ang binayad sa akin. ikaw, magkano ka? ;)

  8. I am not worried at all, jester-in-exile. :) You may scrutinize my mom more, but I don't think you'll find anything about her that you won't like. lol. :) My mom is honest and sincere about her intentions. and I know those who have met her personally can feel that. :) candidates who are in it for the money, or for fame, or for whatever reason... who have no track record of public service... who are all promises -- they are the ones that should be worried about receiving scathing comments from you. :)

p.s. sorry your well-meaning project has drawn negative attention from "anonymous" posters. you and i both know the truth-- hindi ka bayaran. :) i think this is a good project that you must continue, just to spark discourse and ignite interest for the upcoming elections. :)

"We can't export human capital forever and expect our country to grow technologically, economically, even politically."
Isn't it contrary to what you have been promoting; thus causing brain drain to our country, eversince. How can we grow technologically, economically, even politically if most of the best and able citizens of this country who suppose to be doing it here has been promoted to work overseas.

Pano natin masisinop ang bakuran at kabuhayan ng ating inang bayan kung ang kanyang mga anak matapos magsilakihan at humusay ay mistulang ipinamamasukan sa tahanan ng ibang bayan?

  10. where's the contradiction? kaya nga we can't do that forever. can't ha, can't.

The context of your "little piece" is nothing but promoting the Ople's, who are the number one exporter of human capital in our country eversince, then babanatan mo kami ng "We can't export human capital forever and expect our country to grow technologically, economically, even politically." Ini inglis mo pa eh kapos naman pala yang hinagap mo...

Are you playing up with words you dont understand?

  14. @nagugulomihanan -- perhaps you glossed over the sentence preceding that which you are nitpicking over. for your reference, it says: "We need someone like Toots in the legislature, one who will help hammer out legislation towards the upliftment of our OFWs' plight; likewise, we need someone like Toots who will help in working for the long-term goal of encouraging our people to stay and use their talents to help in our own progress."

  15. of course, in reference to ople's recent stand on villar's c5 at taga, she's gotten a negative flag, but that's another story.

i just wish you are right in your hope.
i think one of the reason why we have brain drain in our country today started sometime ago, when ople promoted the labor export in our country. marcos should have contradicted that idea, himself. marcos, in a documented interview admitted he had a second thought about that policy.
am not saying that it is bad policy nor saying it good either. what am saying is your hope to make people stay in our country and the policies created by oples are totally contradicting, eversince.
