Carlo J. Caparas, National Artist? WTF!

Image from iGMA.tv

There you have it, folks: Magno Jose Carlo Caparas, visual arts and film.

Here is his filmography. Does this body of work reflect that which we look for in a National Artist?

Quality is only equivalent to quantity when we talk about feces.

How do I join the protest against this iniquity? Caparas cannot and will never be spoken of in the same breath as Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, and Eddie Romero.

Here is "Komikero" Gerry Alanguilan talking about his visual artwork.

How do I join the protest against this doubly-occurring iniquity? Caparas and his non-artwork honored as National Artist, while Larry Alcala nor Francisco Coching are not?

Bleh.

You want the guidelines on honoring the National Artist? Here.

Now, if the criteria used for Caparas was "broad acceptance through critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works" and "respect and esteem from peers", then quite obviously I'm boycotting Philippine cinema until this injustice is corrected.

Caparas as National Artist. Bleh.

On the other hand, it makes sense. This is, after all, a decree by the Queen of the Enchanted Kingdom.

Carlo J. Caparas, National Artist. God, save us.

  1. I like his comic work. Panday is an icon. But Darna is a bigger icon, and Mars Ravelo isn't in that list.

    Also, why film too?

It's crab mentality when we bitch about every (or most) individual given the National Artist title.

We're just bitching about Caparas being awarded the title.

  6. when the wrong people are honored, it is a dishonor to the rest who are deserving. kaya napaka mediocre natin kasi ayaw natin gamitin ang critical faculties natin. meritocracy and not mediocrity should be the basis for rewards such as this award!

  7. p.s. for those of you who cry "crab mentality", alam nyo ba kung paano nasali sa listahan si caparas?! kung hindi, shut the f@#* up!

  10. Crab mentality? You really think anyone would want to covet the position Carlo Caparas is in now? Duh.

Carlo Caparas and his supporters (the Moratonic gang of one) lie when they say his nomination followed the process. Insiders on the first and second levels of the NCCA nominating levels (including the cinema subcommission) have verified his name didn't even make it through to the first level. What more the second or third of three levels of the vetting process? Hindi siya lumusot at all. Same with his application for the award through the literature and the visual arts subcommissions. He just popped in on the Malacanang level...outside of the legally mandated NCCA selection process...and on the wings of "presidential prerogative" which doesn't exist at all in the law creating the National Artist Awards. On process, therefore, he is disqualified and was not selected.

Then, Caparas and his Moratonic supporter insist he deserves it. Problem is, one is not made a National Artist because he thinks he deserves it ... unless the grassroots arts organizations and his arts peers also share his high opinion of himself. And none of his peers, arts organizations, etc. in cinema or elsewhere thought he deserved it. The award is not his to give to himself. It is the peer groups' to bestow on who they believe deserves it. On whether or not he "deserves" it, therefore, Caparas is just as disqualified ... since his peers do not believe he deserves it (and, by law, it's their opinion that counts, not his).

Carlos Caparas ... isoli mo iyang award na iyan. Hindi sa iyo iyan.
